What are Clarksville Public Records?

Clarksville public records are official documents maintained by various government institutions in the course of their everyday conduct. These records are legally accessible to city residents and non-confidential in nature. Although the Tennessee Freedom of Information law guarantees the right of access of the public, the non-Tennessee public is excluded from this right. A requester is not legally required to provide any reason (or personal information details) to access public records. Nonetheless, a general exception applies to specific records restricted by law or connected to law enforcement. Examples of records that may be restricted from public view include:

  • Patients’ medical records in the custody of state or local government institutions.
  • Job performance/evaluation records of public employees
  • Public school student records
  • Specific ongoing investigative records
  • Records containing details of criminal proceedings.
  • Records detailing probation or parole status of a convicted felon.
  • Records containing certain economic details like land acquisitions
  • Records containing identifying information for the departments for correction.
  • Records detailing legal or administrative proceedings from the attorney general’s office

Records containing personal information about law enforcement officers

(especially those undercover) are also protected from disclosure and are classified as special under the Tenn. Code Ann. § 10-7-504(g). The personnel files of law enforcement officers falls under this category and contain information such as:

  • Officer’s place of work
  • Social Security number
  • The officer’s residential address
  • The officer’s cell and home phone numbers
  • Drivers license information (except for professional drivers)
  • Bank account details (as well as health savings and retirement accounts)
  • The name and contact details of the school or daycare that the officer’s spouse or child attends.
  • Personal information connected to an employee’s close family or household members.

In addition to official sources, public city records may also be accessible from third-party websites. Record seekers may opt to use these non-governmental platforms to search for a specific record or multiple city records. However, users will need to provide enough information to assist with the search, such as:

  • The address of the requestor
  • A case number or file number (if known)
  • The location of the document or person involved
  • The name of the subject involved in the record (not juvenile)
  • The last known or current address of the registrant

Government agencies do not sponsor third-party sites. Because of this, record availability and results may vary.
